Janis Joplin’s Porsche Sells for Nearly Two Million Dollars

The highlight of an auction that took place last December at RM Sotheby’s in New York was hands down the bidding for Janis Joplin’s beloved and beautifully painted Porsche. Predicted to sell for around $400,000 to $600,000, the car sold for a whopping $1.76 million. This is more than three times the expected value and over 500 times the amount that the iconic singer originally paid for it. This happens to be the highest price that a Porsche 356 has ever sold for at an auction, and it was the culmination of a fierce competition between no fewer than seven passionate bidders. “Oh Lord, Won’t You Buy Me a Mercedes Benz?” Joplin, known to her adoring fans as the “Queen of Psychedelic Soul”, famously begged the Almighty for a Mercedes Benz in a song of hers. However, she ended up getting the type of car that her “friends all drive” according to the lyrics: a used Porsche 356 SC Cabriolet that she purchased for $3500 in 1969. This car would be closely identified with her up until her death at age 27. A Psychedelic Car for a Psychedelic Lady in a Psychedelic Era Joplin’s Porsche was white when she bought it. However, for someone with such a colorful personality and lifestyle, such a bland car would never do, and it didn’t stay white for long. Shortly after the purchase, she put one of her roadies on the project of jazzing it up with a psychedelic paint job. Dave Roberts worked for a month on the car, decorating it with birds, butteflies, flowers, mushrooms, wild faces, clairovoyant third eyes inspired...

Meet the World’s Fastest Porsche

The 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder has made its debut as the fastest ever car in production. Not only is it the quickest Porsche on the road, it’s the quickest road car by any maker. It reaches 60 miles per hour in an incredible 2.2 seconds and can go a quarter mile in just 9.8 seconds. No other production car tested by Car and Driver experts has such a powerful accelerating ability. If two of these vehicles started accelerating from rest at either end of a mile-long tunnel, they would be traveling at more than 350 miles per hour when they passed each other in the middle. Shaving Tenths of Seconds Off the Next in Line Cars with this kind of power are hard to come by. The quickest production car of 2008 took 2.5 seconds to reach the 60 mph mark. This was the Bugatti Veyron 16.4, and it took 10.1 ticks to do a quarter mile. This was impressive at the time, and still is. In fact, the Bugatti Veyron is actually equal to the Porsche 918 when the miles per hour mark is raised to 180. Nonetheless, in just seven years, Porsche has raised the bar in a huge way. Three tenths of a second sounds like very little – in fact, it’s about the amount of time it takes for a person to blink – but it becomes an even more amazing achievement as the overall values shrink, since it becomes a much larger percentage of the whole. Other production cars that are among the most powerful accelerators include the McLaren 12C, the Lamborghini Aventador, the...
